Getting informed about current events is important. The most popular source of news information comes from broadcasts on television or radio, or through social media. Aside from this, other options are digital newspapers, magazines, and apps.
The American College Personnel Association (ACPA) recognizes colleges and universities that have a strong commitment to student affairs. They have created an award-winning magazine titled Currents. It was designed to be “an overview of the major issues, research, and trends impacting higher education, and to help you identify and understand key issues.”
A similar but smaller award is the AAEM’s Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award, which is a recognition of U.S. colleges and universities that are advancing diversity, inclusion, and innovation.
In the news business, small is often the best. Small stories often have a big impact. For example, the announcement of a $1.5 million donation for the renovation of an atrium on the Engineering Building on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. This was one of the most popular news stories of the year.
Some of the most interesting and surprising news in 2022 was a surprising number of deaths. Among the most memorable were Queen Elizabeth II, Loretta Lynn, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Another interesting news story of the year was the death of Emily Allen, a first-year SIUE student who died in an automobile accident. She had a goal of becoming a police officer.
The IRIS Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville hosted a fall Digital Humanities Student Showcase. During this event, students showed off their innovative work using digital tools and methods.
