Historically, TV news has been a profitable business. But new video streaming technology is reshaping how we cover the news. Streaming allows viewers to watch wherever they want, and provides a personalized experience. In fact, streaming news is already attracting mass audiences.

As a result, news networks have jumped into the streaming business. These new services repurpose programming from broadcast and cable. Typically, these networks offer reruns, news analysis, and documentaries. They also schedule regular nightly news programs.

For example, Fox, which operates multiple cable news channels, entered the news streaming business with Fox Nation. The service has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. It has also shown that viewers will pay for content.

Despite criticism that the network’s original CNN+ failed to attract viewers, it eventually joined the streaming business. Like other cable companies, the network tried to capitalize on its technological advantage.

For instance, when a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh re-piped its coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse, viewers could easily time-shift to a different station or even watch it later. This allowed viewers to experience live events that might otherwise have been nixed.

Another major draw for streaming is its ability to provide timely news delivery. News programs are scheduled on a schedule that fits the needs of the viewer. Streaming news arrives when it is needed, not when the programmers want it.

Streaming networks are also able to archive content. By repurposing programming, these networks reduce the risk of running out of content.
