The headline of a newspaper is the most important story. It’s often the biggest bold print on the centerfold, designed to attract potential readers. What’s trending depends on how many hits the article has received. Trending news is reader focused and tends to have little impact on society. Stories that generate “buzz” tend to trend, but that doesn’t mean that they are relevant to society. Here’s how to spot trending news.

Breaking news can be called “breaking news.” Earlier, such programming interruptions were limited to urgent news. One of the first major interruptions was the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Walter Cronkite’s coverage was particularly notable. Today, however, breaking news is common on 24-hour news channels. Although, the television industry still favors breaking news, it may seem like a dated practice. There are several ways to tell if a story is breaking.

Breaking news may pause to allow other affiliates of a network to join the feed. If the network’s newscast is not broadcasting at the time, the breaking news graphic may feature music. The anchor may introduce the story. The lower third of the television screen is also altered to convey a sense of urgency. It is common for breaking news stories to end with the words “breaking news” and “special report.”

The radio is also a source for breaking news. Many radio stations are careful not to relay breaking news during play-by-play broadcasts of college or professional sports. This is because these two types of news are the most frequently listened to on radio. Breaking news coverage often comes during commercial breaks or station identification. Unlike in print, radio news is constantly evolving and has more content than television. When breaking news breaks, the radio station often covers it for only a short period of time.
