The future of TV news is likely to be online. Not only will online video streaming not be bound by costly negotiations with cable companies, but it will also reshape the way political news is reported. This means new overtly political news operations could emerge.
There are already some established players in the online video streaming game. They include Al Jazeera, CNN+, Newsmax, and Cheddar. In addition, there are some streaming free-to-watch options. These services are trying to lure viewers away from their cable subscriptions.
One major difference between broadcast and streaming news is that the former allows the viewer to choose the content. With streaming, a viewer can watch a specific program in the morning, at night, or whenever it suits their schedule. It’s also economical to build a news library.
Streaming news has gained momentum, but its success is based on its ability to reach a mass audience. It is often criticized for attracting only a narrow niche audience. However, this trend may change as online video streaming evolves.
A recent study found that a majority of American households subscribe to at least one news streaming service. The average American spends more time watching streaming programming than watching broadcast television.
Major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. As a result, they expect to earn billions of dollars in profit. Some of these operations offer reruns, documentaries, and news analysis. Another popular network, NBC News, produces 10 hours of programming a day.
