Current News is the process of reporting on recent events, usually highlighting stories that are significant or of interest to viewers. This is often done by broadcasters and other media organizations.
Generally speaking, breaking news refers to a story that warrants interruption of regular programming (such as a television newscast) in order to report the details. In some cases, networks will schedule pre-emptions of regular programming weeks in advance to accommodate events such as political speeches and inaugurations.
Breaking news coverage is generally provided for several minutes, but it may also last for an extended period of time. For example, a news event such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 was reported on for hours, and continued for days at a time, with reporters in-studio, in satellite, on telephone, or over broadband (B-GAN).
In the case of television, a breaking news story begins with an opening graphic, often with music, which focuses attention on the importance of the event. A voiceover identifies the breaking news and reminds the viewer to check back for more details on the network’s website or other outlets.
The network may also use a cut-in to allow other local stations to join the feed for the coverage (depending on the magnitude of the event, this will typically be an “extended edition” newscast). When the break occurs, an internal alert service used by the broadcaster’s master control will notify all affiliated stations that a break is in progress.
