Current News, also known as Breaking news and Special report, is a television programming format in which an event that is important to the public is covered. This coverage may be live, as in the case of a major disaster or severe weather event (for example, during a tornado), or it may be rerun in the later part of a newscast after a reporter has been assigned to follow up on the details of the incident.
The broadcasting process for breaking news typically begins with a network feed pausing to allow other affiliate stations to join in the coverage and an opening graphic featuring music that emphasizes the importance of the news. Depending on the size and severity of the event, the coverage may last for a few minutes or several hours – or sometimes for days at a time.
In radio, breaking news is often structured in a similar manner. The opening graphic, voiceover, and lower thirds may all be emphasized to convey a sense of urgency. The story may be introduced by an anchor, or the news director or producer may take over to give additional information about the event as it develops.
During an interruption of current non-news programming, the broadcaster usually alerts all affiliated stations via an internal alert service (such as a fax or email) to stand by. When the break is over, the network will re-roll an opening graphic and voiceover and resume programming as normal.
