Current News is a type of news reporting that includes coverage of breaking news events. This term is commonly applied to television programming, but may also be used in radio news broadcasts.

Depending on the nature of the story, it may last only minutes or be continuous for hours or even days at a time. If it is a breaking story, then the anchor will usually begin the report by reminding viewers of the importance of the event. Often the anchor will remind viewers to watch their local news that day, as well as the network’s nightly or morning program if applicable for more details on the event.

Coverage of the breaking news is followed by a montage or sequence of images and video of the event. The anchor may introduce a reporter in the field who will relay more details as they become available.

In addition to the live coverage, the newscast will often include interviews with experts and/or a news analyst in-studio or through phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN), and other methods of communication. If the story involves a major incident, the network may send an emergency alert to all its affiliates and disseminate information from an internal alert service provided by the master control of the network.

The format of a breaking news or special report is very similar to that of a regular newscast, but the open usually contains a countdown that pauses to allow other network affiliates to join in the feed, and the lower third typically contains a graphic that says “breaking news”. When a breaking news or special report ends, a brief outro often shows the network’s website for further details on the event, as well as directing viewers to their local news station or news division for more information.
