Current News is a news segment on television, radio or online that covers recent events. The segment is usually accompanied by commentary. The content may be provided by a local station or by a network.
The term breaking news is frequently used to describe a story which warrants interruption of current programming for the sake of reporting its details. This can include a major natural disaster, political event or other high-profile incident.
Breaking news coverage is typically anchored by an anchor who welcomes viewers to the program and introduces the story in question. The anchor may also cut away to a live shot of the event or interview with a reporter at the scene.
This is usually done in conjunction with a news feed from the network, or for local stations, from a dedicated feed. In the case of national networks, the open graphic is modified to convey the news’s importance, with music to accompany it (typically NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” composed by John Williams).
A short countdown to an upcoming breaking news segment is then displayed at the bottom of the screen, along with a brief description of what will happen next. A similar feature may be seen on local television, where the same countdown is displayed during a local newscast, although the opening graphics are different.
The breaking news may last only a few seconds or may continue for hours – or even days if time permits. If the story extends over an extended period of time, analysts or experts may be integrated into the news report.
