Current News (also known as Breaking News, Special Report, or News Flash) is a term used by television and radio stations to indicate an immediate news story that has occurred. These stories may be deemed significant, but are not necessarily the most urgent or important.
In broadcast television, the format typically consists of an opening graphic featuring music and a voiceover welcoming viewers to the breaking news, followed by the introduction of a news anchor who introduces the story being covered. The anchor may cut away to video or images of the event as well, and the coverage may be passed to a reporter at the scene of the incident.
If the story breaks during prime time, the anchor will usually remind viewers that more details are available on their local newscast or a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning news program. If the program is new to air or highly rated, the show may be joined in progress while the breaking news coverage is in progress or it will start back up at the point of interruption.
In radio, a similar process occurs, but instead of an opening graphic and a news anchor, the station may announce the breaking news in its regular theme or bulletin, with a call-to-action to listeners to check out the network’s website for more information. While this approach is usually criticized for being too soft and unimportant, it is required by law in some countries.
