Current News is a type of broadcast programming that focuses on the most important stories of the moment, or on stories that have not been reported on previously. It may be a newscast, or it could be an “extended edition” of a program.
Breaking news
A breaking news story is an event that is considered to be extremely urgent and worthy of interruption of normal broadcasting for reporting details. This may be because it involves a significant political figure or because it is considered to have widespread implications for public safety and the community at large.
The format of breaking news is similar to that of regular special reports on television and radio, with a countdown to the cut-in, a brief opening graphic featuring music or other emphasis (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”, composed by John Williams), a voiceover from a network anchor and a promise that more information will be provided later. During the broadcast, lower thirds and other graphics are also altered to convey the sense of urgency that is associated with the news event.
During a breaking news story, local television stations sometimes take over the network feed for an “extended edition” of their evening newscasts. This is facilitated by a reverse countdown to the point where stations are able to switch back and forth, or by an internal alert service utilized by a station’s master control. When the broadcast ends, a promo will be rolled to remind viewers that more information is available on their station’s website and other platforms.
