The news is always in a state of flux, so it’s important to stay on top of what’s trending. When an event is breaking, reporters have to be fast to report it as quickly as possible. But they also have to get it right. If you’re covering a breaking story, never take information from sources without first verifying it. Even eyewitness accounts can be wrong. For example, NPR reported that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords died after a shooting in Arizona when the congresswoman actually survived. It was based on bad information from a panicked bystander. It’s also critical to be able to confirm your claims with authorities in the case of a tragedy.
