Trending is a segment on Current News that talks about the top news stories trending right now. Trending is one of the most popular segments on CNN and is currently on the air across all platforms.
Breaking news is a term used to describe any event that necessitates the interruption of non-news programs or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts, in order to provide timely coverage of the news at hand. When a breaking story is discovered that warrants the interrupting of regular programming, the network will usually alert its affiliates to stand by for a break in program and issue a countdown sequence that allows local stations to switch to the national feed. The use of a special ticker in place of a standard station imaging promo or program reminder is also common, lessening the need for cut-ins.
