Breaking news is a term used by television and radio networks to alert viewers of an important news event that may require them to interrupt previously scheduled non-news programming to provide the report, or “cut-in”. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of interruption of regular broadcasts was limited to events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage and thus needed to be interrupted at numerous stations across the country.
