Current News is a term used by broadcasters to describe breaking stories that are of sufficient urgency to interrupt currently airing non-news programming (or in the case of national network newscasts, regular daily scheduled programs). In addition to alerting viewers that an interruption will be coming up, the broadcast will typically begin with a countdown sequence. Once the break has begun, the station will then switch to a network feed, often with a special opening graphic and distinctive music cue that conveys a sense of urgency. Breaking news events may be covered for only a few minutes or, depending on their severity, they may require prolonged, extended coverage. In the case of national networks, they will often use “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers that are available to affiliates for their own local interruption coverage.
