What’s currently making headlines.
A breaking news story is a current event that warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). This often starts with a countdown sequence on the national network’s feed to allow affiliate stations to switch over, followed by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Then, a news anchor begins reporting on the story at hand. Breaking news events can last for a few minutes or, in the case of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, an hour or more. In some cases, lower thirds and other graphics may be used to emphasize the urgency of the situation. This technique was rarely used before 24-hour news networks became commonplace.
