Breaking news is a type of television or radio broadcast journalism that is highly urgent or breaking, and requires the temporary interruption of non-news programming. This practice was common prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, but has also been used during major network regular newscasts. When a breaking story occurs, the newscast will usually pause, and a graphic will appear on screen, asking viewers to stand by. Once the relevant information is available, the newscast will resume. A countdown sequence will often be displayed, to give network affiliates time to switch over to the newscast from their own local feed. In recent years, some stations have begun to use special tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
