Breaking news refers to an event or story that is so important that it requires an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, regularly scheduled programming) to report on it. Prior to the creation of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were only reserved for extremely urgent or world-shaking events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required all national television and radio stations to interrupt regular programming for an extended period of time in order to cover the story.
