When a significant news event occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or, in some cases, regular network news broadcasts, the event is usually announced to viewers through a breaking news graphic, and the program is then interrupted. This is often called a newsflash or special report, and may include an opening text crawl, a distinctive music cue, and lower thirds that convey urgency. Prior to the development of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were often restricted to events that warranted nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming. Examples included the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, and severe weather events.
