Breaking news is a broadcasting term for events that elicit such urgent coverage that they require an interruption of current non-news programming. This may include regularly scheduled newscasts, especially on national network affiliates. Usually, when a breaking news story occurs, the network will alert its affiliates to stand-by, and then interrupt its regular programming with a graphic open and special music cue, typically followed by a reporter on the ground or in the studio. The report may last a few minutes or continue for multiple hours or days. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to use the “Special Report” ticker during regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
