Breaking news is a news event that elicits enough urgency to warrant an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) for live reporting. This type of coverage can be brief or sustained for hours or even days, and may be supplemented with analysis from in-studio, on-location, via phone, satellite, or broadband (B-GAN). Often, network affiliates will interrupt their regular programming to air the breaking news, which is typically announced by a graphic that says “Newsflash,”“Special Report” or other identifier. This technique was used in the past for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, for which a special breaking news graphic was used.
