Breaking news is news coverage of a sudden event, requiring immediate attention or coverage by a television or radio station. This is often presented using a special graphic, an alert crawl or cut-ins during regular programming, or, in the case of national network newscasts, a countdown to allow local affiliates to join the feed and interrupt their own programming. This type of interruption is most common on 24-hour news networks. In the past, such breaks were usually reserved for major events of widespread interest, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required stations across the country to halt their normal programming.
