Unless an event is so significant that it requires immediate national coverage and interrupts regular non-news programming, newscasts on broadcast stations usually use a breaking news graphic, sometimes with a unique music cue, to notify viewers that the news is coming. The station’s regular commercial advertising will be interrupted, if necessary. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, such “Newsflash” or “Special Report” interruptions of regular programming were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required the interruption of multiple local television and radio stations. The break may be short or sustained for a longer period of time.
