A breaking news event is a piece of news that warrants an immediate interruption of regular programming (and, for national network newscasts, the interruption of regularly scheduled affiliate stations). A countdown sequence, often using a distinctively-sounding music cue, precedes the break; it may also use a special graphics package. In the past, such interruptions were reserved for extremely serious events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and would involve network affiliates being instructed to revert to a special report with a live news anchor. In recent years, this practice has been largely replaced by 24-hour news networks that have live anchors available for a breaking-news interrupt at any time.
