While the majority of the American population may be familiar with TV news, it is a dying format. Cable TV subscriptions have dropped from 76 percent in 2015 to just 56 percent in 2021. That means that the Fox News Channel is losing an average of $20 per subscriber every year. Today, 85 percent of households subscribe to a streaming service. While TV news has long been an audience-driven medium, streaming is the future of the news industry.
CNN has followed the lead of its rivals, like MSNBC and Fox. Although it has far more journalists than any other U.S. television news operation, many critics have questioned whether the channel would be popular with the general public. CNN soon employed more journalists than any other U.S. TV news operation, and even spawned MSNBC and Fox News Channel. In fact, CBS attempted to buy CNN but failed to do so.
In addition to news broadcasts, major streaming networks offer a wide variety of content. From documentaries to news analysis, these services are transforming traditional newscasts. As a result, current news is accessible from anywhere. And with the rising number of connected devices, people have an opportunity to consume more information about what is going on in their world. It is easy to access and watch a live stream of current news. That’s why so many TV stations now offer streaming services.
Despite the potential of streaming, major news networks have high hopes for the new format. In fact, CBS News co-president Wendy McMahon cites marathon streaming of breaking news by local TV stations. A recent shooting in Sacramento, for example, would have interrupted local coverage of the Grammys. On the other hand, local CBS affiliates piped their coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse to streamers. There’s no clear indication whether streaming will be a long-term trend, but the industry is certainly hopeful for its future.
