Breaking news is the reporting of urgent, time-sensitive information that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news programming. A broadcaster may then provide an initial, standalone newsflash announcing the story or interrupt its regular network feed and issue an alert crawl during regularly scheduled programming. Typically, the story will also be followed by a full-length report by a live anchor. Traditionally, breaking news was used during severe weather events or other nationally significant events that required widespread coverage and forced several stations to suspend their programming. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have adopted the use of special tickers that allow them to present breaking stories without needing to interrupt regularly scheduled programming for cut-ins.
