Trending is a breaking news report with special effects that appears on national network news programs and on some local television stations. It is typically accompanied by a news anchor who speaks about the story. Breaking news reports may be brief or extended and can cover topics such as politics, sports, weather, science, or entertainment. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, broadcasters typically reserved breaking news interruptions for events that demanded nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming (e.g., the assassination of John F.
