About Current News
Trending is a breaking news alert that is displayed during non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, the regular broadcast). When an event warrants interruption of regular programming for national coverage or requires the immediate attention of local station affiliates, a countdown sequence begins before the network feed automatically interrupts any non-news programming or the regular newscast. This type of break is more common at 24-hour news networks, which have anchors on-call for live breaking news. Previously, such breaks were reserved for the most urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that required widespread coverage requiring several stations to interrupt their normal programming for extended periods of time.
