Breaking news is an event in the news that necessitates an interruption of non-news programming, or, in the case of network broadcasts, a pause in the regular broadcast, so that affiliate stations can switch over to the network news feed. Often, a special graphic will be displayed to alert viewers to the breaking story and music cues may be played to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, breaking-news interruptions were reserved for events deemed exceptionally urgent, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Special-report tickers are also used for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for cut-ins.
