In broadcast television and radio, breaking news is coverage of a rapidly developing story that demands immediate attention and usually interrupts either current non-news programming or a regularly scheduled newscast. The interruption is typically signalled by a countdown sequence and the network logo is displayed, often with an appropriate music cue. Occasionally, an event is so severe that it warrants nationwide coverage and requires stations to suspend their normal advertising and break into a special report, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or major earthquakes. In recent years, many networks have begun using special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers during regular newscasts, lessening the need for break-ins.
