If a news event happens that elicits nationwide coverage and requires multiple stations to interrupt regular programming, this is usually called breaking news. Examples of this include severe weather events, such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes; human interest stories, such as the rescue of a drowned child; or even a crime in progress, such as an armed robbery or hostage situation. The news breaks are often announced by an anchor and may include an opening graphic accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Previously, news networks only interrupted regular programming for extremely urgent stories such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, but now 24-hour news channels have a live anchor ready to interrupt their own programming at any time.
