Breaking news is an event that occurs during a television or radio broadcast where a significant and imminently urgent story warrants the interruption of non-news programming. When such an event occurs, the network will usually alert its affiliates that they should stand by for breaking news and then begin a countdown sequence to enable them to switch to the network feed during the time of the break. If the network is already carrying a regularly scheduled newscast at the moment of breaking news, that newscast will usually be interrupted; however, in recent years some stations have begun to use special “Special Report” tickers during regular programming when an event warrants such coverage.
