Depending on the story, the special report may only last a few minutes or it could continue for hours or even days. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such programming interruptions were typically reserved for extremely important events like the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which would prompt stations to interrupt regular programs on a nationwide basis.
