Trending is a term used for an important breaking news story, usually requiring the interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of a national network newscast, a countdown sequence to allow network affiliate stations to switch to the news feed. A special report is typically introduced with a distinctive opening graphic and a distinct music cue that conveys the seriousness of the situation. The breaking news event may last for only a few minutes, or may continue for hours or even days. Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for particularly urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
