Current News talks about the top stories that are getting a lot of attention.
Breaking news is live television and radio coverage of urgent events that must be reported immediately. This may involve a serious accident or attack, an election result that must be announced, or severe weather such as a tornado or landfalling hurricane. It typically interrupts non-news programming or a regularly scheduled newscast, with the network telling affiliate stations to stand by and switching to a countdown sequence (and occasionally changing lower third graphics to create a sense of urgency). A breaking news story may be broadcast for only a few minutes, or continue for hours or even days. Before 24-hour news networks existed, a breaking news alert would often require multiple stations to interrupt their programs, using a cut-in with a special newsflash graphic and music cue. In recent years, some major networks have begun to use “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories during their regular newscasts, lessening the need for break-ins.
