Trending talks about current news that is generating a lot of buzz. This includes stories about celebrities, politics, sports and other topics of interest. If an event is breaking news, a network will interrupt its regular non-news programming or its national newscast with a graphic that asks viewers to stand by for the interruption, and may also alter lower thirds on the screen to convey the urgency of the story. In the days before 24-hour news networks, these interruptions were reserved for extremely important events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. More recently, networks have used special tickers during regularly scheduled programming to convey breaking news stories.
