Breaking news is a term used to describe a news event that requires immediate coverage and interrupts current non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, regular broadcasts. Such reports may last only a few minutes or continue for hours or even days. Networks typically provide breaking news reports through their news anchors or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, an on-air host ready to interrupt normal programming at a moment’s notice via satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other methods. Often, networks also provide breaking news via a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic that runs across the top of the hour overlaid with a distinctive music cue.
