Breaking news is a news story of urgent importance that requires an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regular scheduled newscasts). The breaking news event may last only a few minutes or several hours or days. The network may alert its affiliates to the event by interrupting current non-news programming with a newsflash or special report (or even using lower third graphics indicating “breaking news”). A countdown sequence is often used, as well.
