When an event occurs that elicits national coverage and requires television and radio stations to interrupt non-news programming, or in the case of network newscasts to pause their live feed, a breaking news graphic is displayed with a distinct music cue. This is often referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report. Breaking news often consists of short news items, but may also cover longer stories and include interviews with experts and witnesses. Before the era of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was limited to highly serious events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations to stop their regular programming for extended live coverage.
