Newsflash, Special Report, and Breaking News are a series of graphic elements and an audio cue that indicate the occurrence of current events which are “breaking.” Breaking news typically interrupts regular programming to cover a significant event or a serious development. The event may require a full interruption of the network feed, or a cut-in during another program (e.g. a weather event). Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was generally restricted to events that required nationwide coverage and would cause stations to interrupt regular programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. However, many stations now provide a Special Report ticker for select breaking news stories during regularly scheduled newscasts, reducing the need for such cut-ins.
