When a news event occurs that requires an immediate break in regular programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a short-lived pause to allow affiliate stations to switch to the network feed), it is referred to as a “breaking news” story. The report begins with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue, which can then be interrupted by a live news anchor who provides information about the event.
