Trending is a news segment on television and radio programs that highlights breaking stories in the media. When a story is considered to be of national importance, it may interrupt non-news programming, or in the case of 24-hour news networks with live reporting, regular newscasts. The network will usually alert its affiliates to the break, and will then pause its current program and begin a countdown sequence so that any affiliated stations can switch over to the news feed. Often times, the news report will be accompanied by an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue.
