A breaking news event is an urgent current news story which requires an interruption of regular non-news programming (or, for network news, regular, pre-scheduled newscasts) to provide live reporting on the developing situation. Such reports are often referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special Report” and may be overlaid on station graphics or accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Breaking news reports may be limited to just a few minutes, or continue for hours or even days as the situation develops. In the latter case, networks will often run a special ticker that allows affiliates to insert their own identification over the top of the national network feed. This replaces the need for a conventional news cut-in. In the past, such breaks were usually reserved for highly pressing, nation-wide events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
