A breaking news story is a significant event that warrants an interruption in regular programming on a broadcast television or radio station. Typically, national network newscasts pause to allow affiliate stations to join the national feed to carry breaking news stories. Often, a graphic and distinctive music cue will be played to inform viewers that the break is occurring. Then, the newscast resumes with an anchor and live reporting of the developing story. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news networks, news breaks were only used for events that required nationwide coverage and required multiple stations to interrupt their programming. Occasionally, stations will use lower thirds or alert crawls to show the story without interrupting programming. This is known as a Newsflash or Special Report.
