In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is a segment of a program that interrupts non-news programming to cover a story of urgent public interest. This usually involves a major event such as an accident, fire, natural disaster or sudden onset of severe weather. Prior to the era of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were generally reserved for events that required nationwide coverage and interrupted multiple stations’ regular programming; such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which was broken by CBS News with the use of a special graphic and distinctive music cue. In modern times, a breaking news ticker may be used to interrupt programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
