When breaking news events occur, television or radio stations typically interrupt non-news programming with a special, often brief, report. This is called a “breaking news story”, although it may also be known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. Breaking news stories usually appear during nationally broadcast newscasts, but they can also be interrupted during local or regional programming. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were only used for extremely urgent news, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required many stations nationwide to break away from regular programs to provide live coverage.
