About Trending

In news broadcasting, breaking news is news that occurs so quickly or is of such serious importance that it warrants an immediate interruption in regular, non-news programming (or, in the case of network television, regularly scheduled newscasts). Breaking news may be covered through special graphics and music, alert crawls during normal programming or, as on 24-hour cable channels, by live interruptive coverage with an anchor.

NPR’s Trending looks at some of the stories that are making headlines this week:

* An investigation into a late labor leader and civil rights advocate has revealed allegations of abuse and rape. * Unmanned drones are cheaper than missiles and easy to produce, but are reshaping warfare around the world.

Until the development of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were typically reserved for events that were considered so important as to require nationwide coverage and thus prompt stations to interrupt their regular programming. In recent years, major television networks have begun to use “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programs, reducing the need for regular cut-ins.
