If an event warrants immediate, urgent coverage that requires interruption of regular, non-news programming (or, in some cases, even a regularly scheduled network newscast), broadcasters may interrupt their programming with a “Newsflash” or “Special report.”[1] The graphics used to accompany these reports can be altered to convey a sense of urgency, and station identification is usually overlaid during the report. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, these breaking stories were normally covered through a cut-in in regular programming or alert crawls during standard weather reports.
