In broadcasting, breaking news is an event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming. Such interruptions are typically announced with a distinctive music cue, and a special graphic with the word “Breaking News.” Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were restricted to events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which caused many stations to interrupt their regular programs. In more recent times, the major news networks have used tickers during regularly scheduled programming to break important stories, lessening the need for interruptions. This type of coverage is also known as a Newsflash or Special Report.
