Breaking news is a news event that occurs suddenly and warrants immediate, nationwide coverage, which requires the interruption of regular programming on local radio and television stations. This was common before 24-hour news networks existed, and was usually reserved for events of great importance, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or a severe weather situation that required immediate response, such as a tornado warning. Depending on the importance of the story, it is often announced with an opening graphic and distinctively recognizable music cue. Network affiliates may also use a countdown sequence to allow viewers to switch to the network news feed.
