A news event that is so important, urgent or serious that it requires the interruption of regular programming. Typically, such breaking news is reported through a special graphic and distinct newsflash or alert ticker. Often, lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news coverage was rare in North America before the advent of 24-hour news channels, but it is commonplace today. When a story warrants such an interruption, the news network usually alerts its affiliates to expect the report, and may provide a countdown sequence that can be used by stations to switch to the network feed.
